Membership in Cantare’s adult choirs is by audition. The Chamber Ensemble is limited to 24 singers while the Cantare Chorale is a symphonic choir of approximately 100 singers.
Auditions are conducted by Artistic Director David Morales. For the Chorale they are held by appointment prior to each respective concert series. Auditions for the Chamber Ensemble are held prior to the beginning of the annual season. Previous choral experience is essential.
Auditions are used to determine vocal timbre, range, vocal flexibility and musicianship skills. Those auditioning will be asked to vocalize, sing a brief solo of their choosing (aria, art or folk song, show tune, etc.) and sight-read choral selections provided. A current singer may be re-auditioned at any time at the discretion of the Artistic Director.
Chorale singers are able to choose to sing an entire season or select a particular session that fits the singer’s schedule. Chamber Ensemble singers must be able to sing the entire annual season. The tuition fee for the 2009-2010 season is $290 annually, or $100 per session (three sessions per season).
Chorale rehearsals are predominantly on Sunday afternoons in Oakland, occasionally on Tuesday evenings in Lafayette if Sundays fall on a holiday weekend, but generally only once a week. Chamber Ensemble rehearsals are Monday evenings.
The first two rehearsals of the fall season are open for potential singers to “Take Us for a Spin” prior to auditioning. The first rehearsal of sessions 2 and 3 are also open. This gives potential singers a chance assess if the Chorale feels like a good mix before scheduling an audition.
